Our Learning Continuum

At Rose Hill Montessori, we view early childhood education as a continuous, unfolding journey rather than a series of rigid grade levels. Our classrooms are intentionally mixed-age and thoughtfully prepared to meet children where they are developmentally, while gently inviting them into what comes next. Rooted in Montessori and Reggio Emilia principles, our approach honors curiosity, independence, and relationships, allowing learning to grow naturally through play, observation, meaningful work, and connection with peers. Academic readiness is woven in gradually and purposefully alongside social-emotional growth, so children build confidence, competence, and a genuine love of learning as they move through their years with us.

The 2s

Building Trust, Independence, and Joyful Exploration

The 2s year is centered on helping children feel safe, confident, and capable as they take their first steps into a school community. This year is less about academics and more about laying the essential foundation for all future learning: emotional security, independence, language development, and a sense of belonging.

Children are supported through separation with warmth and consistency, developing trust in their teachers, the environment, and themselves. Predictable daily rhythms help children feel grounded and understand what comes next throughout the day.

The classroom offers rich opportunities for practical life experiences, sensory exploration, music, movement, art, and language. Children practice caring for themselves and their environment through simple, meaningful tasks, building autonomy and confidence. Language is modeled constantly through songs, stories, conversation, and play, supporting rapid language growth.

While there is no expectation of academic output, children are gently introduced to books, symbols, early counting, and hands-on materials that support emerging language and math awareness. The focus remains on curiosity and engagement, not performance.

By the end of the 2s year, children leave feeling more independent, socially aware, emotionally regulated, and ready to step into preschool with confidence and excitement.

Young 3s

A Thoughtful Transition Into Preschool Learning

The Young 3s year serves as a bridge between toddlerhood and more intentional preschool learning. Building on the security and independence developed in the 2s, children begin to participate more fully in the classroom community and to see themselves as learners.

At this stage, children develop longer attention spans, expanding language, and a growing awareness of peers. They practice following classroom rhythms, engaging in group experiences, expressing ideas with words, and navigating early friendships with teacher guidance.

Curriculum becomes more defined while remaining hands-on and play-based. In the second half of the year, children are gently introduced to early journal work through drawing, dictation, and early mark-making. Many begin showing strong interest in the letters of their own names and those of their friends, noticing shapes, sounds, and patterns in meaningful, personal ways. Early sound and letter awareness is woven naturally into songs, stories, games, and daily classroom experiences.

Mathematical thinking begins to emerge through hands-on exploration with manipulatives and construction materials. Children explore counting, quantity, sorting, and spatial relationships, building early number sense without expectation of mastery.

Fine-motor skills continue to strengthen through art, sensory work, practical life activities, and early writing experiences. Learning remains invitational rather than outcome-driven, allowing each child to engage at their own pace.

By the end of the Young 3s year, children are more confident communicators and are ready to deepen their engagement with learning in the Older 3s year.

Older 3s

Deepening Foundations and Growing Independence

The Older 3s year builds directly on the confidence and curiosity developed during the transition year. Children are more settled in the classroom and increasingly ready to engage with academic ideas in sustained and meaningful ways.

Children continue learning in a mixed-age environment, often alongside children in the Pre-K / Leadership Year. This structure encourages growth through observation, collaboration, and inspiration, allowing learning to unfold naturally and without pressure.

Curriculum becomes more intentional over the course of the year. Journal work expands to include more detailed drawing, dictation, and emerging writing. Children deepen their engagement with letters and sounds, exploring phonemic awareness and making early sound-letter connections through hands-on, meaningful experiences.

Mathematical thinking grows in complexity as children use manipulatives to explore counting with purpose, number relationships, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving. Building, measuring, and constructing support a deeper understanding of quantity, form, and space.

Children also strengthen skills essential for readiness in the years ahead, including sustained focus, persistence, independence, collaboration, and confidence in expressing ideas. Teachers observe closely and guide each child forward based on readiness.

By the end of the Older 3s year, children have developed strong learning habits and growing academic awareness, preparing them to step confidently into the Pre-K / Leadership Year.

Pre-K / Leadership Year

Confidence, Responsibility, and Readiness

The Pre-K / Leadership Year is the culminating year at Rose Hill and is designed for our oldest children. During this year, children integrate the academic, social, and emotional foundations developed in earlier years while stepping into meaningful leadership roles within the classroom.

Children engage in more sustained and complex work while continuing to learn in a mixed-age environment. As leaders, they model routines, support younger peers, and take on increased responsibility, strengthening empathy, communication, and self-confidence.

Academic learning deepens with purpose. Children participate in regular journal writing that includes drawing, dictation, and increasing use of letters, words, and storytelling. Literacy work strengthens phonemic awareness, sound-letter relationships, and early reading readiness in ways that feel engaging and meaningful. Mathematical thinking expands to include number relationships, measurement, problem-solving, and spatial reasoning through hands-on materials and real-world applications.

This year also emphasizes executive functioning and independence. Children practice planning their work, sustaining focus, collaborating with peers, and persisting through challenges, all with teacher support tailored to individual readiness.

By the end of the Pre-K / Leadership Year, children leave Rose Hill academically prepared, socially confident, emotionally grounded, and excited for the transition to kindergarten.

FAQ

Is Rose Hill a play-based program or an academic program?

Rose Hill Montessori is both, in the best sense of the word. We are deeply play-based and hands-on, while also intentionally introducing academic concepts in developmentally appropriate ways. Children learn through exploration, meaningful materials, relationships, and real experiences, rather than worksheets or rote instruction.

Do children receive kindergarten preparation at Rose Hill Montessori?

Yes. Kindergarten readiness is thoughtfully woven into the curriculum over time. Children are gradually introduced to early literacy, math thinking, problem-solving, and learning habits in ways that feel natural and engaging. By the time children leave Rose Hill, they are academically prepared, socially confident, and emotionally ready for kindergarten.

When do children begin working with letters, numbers, and writing?

Exposure begins early in playful, hands-on ways. As children move into the Young 3s and Older 3s years, many naturally become interested in letters, especially those in their own names and their friends’ names. Journal work, early sound awareness, and math materials are introduced gently and expand over time based on readiness.

What is the Pre-K / Leadership Year?

The Pre-K / Leadership Year is the culminating year at Rose Hill Montessori and is designed for our oldest children. During this year, children take on leadership roles within the classroom while engaging in deeper academic work, longer-term projects, and increased responsibility. It brings together the academic, social, and emotional foundations developed in earlier years.

How does the mixed-age classroom benefit children?

Mixed-age classrooms allow children to learn from one another naturally. Younger children are inspired by observing older peers, while older children strengthen their understanding by modeling, mentoring, and leading. This structure supports confidence, empathy, and a strong sense of community.

Will my child be pushed academically?

No. Children are never rushed or pressured. Teachers carefully observe each child and introduce materials and concepts when they are developmentally ready. Learning is invitational rather than outcome-driven, allowing children to grow with confidence and joy.

What does “school readiness” mean at Rose Hill Montessori?

School readiness at Rose Hill includes more than academic skills. It means children can focus, persist with tasks, communicate needs, collaborate with peers, follow routines, and feel confident as learners. These skills, combined with strong early literacy and math foundations, support a smooth transition to kindergarten.

“At my older daughter’s preschool they did activities. At Rose Hill my child does activities to LEARN things. I’m so happy I made the switch to Rose Hill Montessori for my son. The staff are warm and engaging and the projects are so creative. It’s the best school in the area by a long shot!”

“Our 4 year old daughter has been at Rose Hill for almost a year and continuing with summer camp. She is excited daily to go to school and just as excited to tell me what she did at school. Rose Hill has warm and caring teachers and staff, a bright and inviting environment both with their indoor and 2 outdoor spaces.  Every interaction with the director, assistant director and teachers have been pleasant. The way they nurture the children and really invest in their learning and exploring is greatly appreciated.  It is a place we will miss dearly when my daughter moves on to Kindergarten..”
